Searchers found a needle in a haystack, or rather, a kitten in a canola field Tuesday afternoon north of High River.

Sondra Jones was on her way to get a coffee at Tim's when she saw an eastbound driver throw a kitten out of their vehicle window.

"At first I thought, 'Did this really happen, or did this cat run out into the field from under the wheels?' But we caught up, and I thought, 'Oh my God,' so I immediately parked, ran across the street in front of a transport, but I lost the kitten in the ditch. I posted it on the High River Rant And Rave Group, and honestly, 25 people came out. It was amazing," Jones says.

The incident happened at about 10:30 Tuesday morning, and searchers were able to locate the kitten at about 2 p.m.

Tanya Vander Ploeg, Amber Garofano, and Christine Doepe were able to locate it with the help of several others.

A Fountain Tire employee even brought out his truck and turned the lights on for them during his lunch break.

Jones says it was great seeing everyone come together.

"We had people from Okotoks come driving down. We had people from Black Diamond. It was unbelievable. The community here in High River and surrounding area is just amazing."

The kitten had a sore mouth and looked scared but was otherwise fine.

Heaven Can Wait has named the kitten '498' for the area where it was found, and one of the searchers, Amber Garofano, plans to adopt it.
