A big weekend for the Turner Valley Braves mixed slow-pitch team as they try their luck one last time at a gold medal at the Alberta 55+ Games in Strathmore starting Friday.

Team Captain Mickey Getten says they have their sights set on the perennial powerhouse from Edmonton as their chief rival.

"Edmonton is the power this year and they proved it last year at the Canadian Games in Strathcona County. They just blew away everybody in five innings across the board. So they're the team to beat. We figure we can hold our own with St. Albert and Calgary and hopefully meet the Edmonton team in the finals."

Getten says for them this is likely their last kick at the can for winning gold as a mixed team as games organizers will likely eliminate the sport for the next games as they're just not drawing enough interest.

The Braves have never won gold at this level, they do however have a couple of silver and bronze medals.
