Foothills County is looking to add the Okotoks Erratic, or "Big rock" to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Division Two Councillor, Delilah Miller, says it would bring a lot of tourism to the area.

"Because there's a lot of people who follow these UNESCO sites. I really think it would add another level of protection to the Big Rock. I do see a number of people climbing on it, which is not allowed."

Miller says it's a perfect fit.

"I think the Big Rock fits quite nicely. It's very unique. It would be a really good addition, I think to the world UNESCO sites already there."

She says it could take over a year from the time they file the application until they hear back from the United Nations one way or the other.

Out of 20 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Canada, six are here in Alberta, including:

Writing On Stone Provincial Park
Waterton Glacier International Peace Park
Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks (Banff/Jasper)
Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump
Dinosaur Provincial Park
Wood Buffalo National Park
