The Town of Okotoks Operations Centre has won the Alberta Public Works Association's Project of the Year award.

On Tuesday, Nov. 14 Jeanette Austin, Executive Director, Alberta Public Works Association, came to Okotoks to present the award to Council.

Peter McDowell, Transportation Supervisor for the Town of Okotoks, says the new Operations Centre was named project of the year for many reasons.

"We were selected over a number of projects for the criteria; the use of good construction management techniques, as well as going for the LEED certification, using sustainability to manage the storm water on the site, and all the energy efficient and smart technologies associated with the building."

McDowell shares the Town is very happy to recieve the award for the Operations Centre, which took just over a year to construct.

"We're very excited to be recognized by the Alberta Public Works association for Project of the Year for our new Operations Centre."

He adds the Town will now also be vying for an International Public Works title.

"We are being selected by the Alberta Public Works Association to put our project forward for the American Public Works Association Project of the Year that would be decided in 2018 at their conference in Kansas City."

The Operations Centre runs off 100% wind power, and is 32% more energy efficient than most buildings its size.
