Some High Riverittes who went for a walk in George Lane Park on the long weekend were left sickened by some anti-Asian graffiti painted on some concrete blocks.

RCMP Constable Jill Kingdon-Mills says they are aware of the incident.

"We're keeping an eye on it, but we do have to make sure that we take into context who wrote it, what they were thinking when they wrote it and that kind of stuff," she says. "As a police service we'd like to know who wrote it and we'd like to have a chat with them."

She says whether they'd be able to lay charges would depend on the context behind it.

"Any graffiti is against the law and a person could face a charge of mischief for that," Kingdon-Mills says. "In terms of any charges relating to inciting hate, or racism, along that line, that's what I'm referring to when I say we have to consider the context behind it."

"Certainly we're living in a world right now that has a lot of extra challenges, truths and untruths in the media and how to distinguish what is true and what's untrue can be difficult and I think it could be possible for somebody to get sucked into that kind of stuff and represent it through graffiti without actually knowing exactly what it's all about and that's where we would love to be part of educating and explaining the risks and harms that come from making graffiti that comes with a slant that could be considered racism."

Constable Kingdon-Mills says they will lay charges if necessary but their first instinct is education.

Anyone with information is asked to call the local detachment at 403-652-2357.
