Family Day Unplugged in Okotoks was a success.

The Rec Centre hosted free activities like swimming, skating, arts and crafts, and had two big bouncy castles in the gym, all in an effort to get children off electronics and families out together.

Mark Doherty, community events coordinator, says it was well received and he saw plenty of happy faces.

"It's been a really good crowd actually," Doherty says. "Our first swim was completely at capacity within 10 minutes, however as people came out we got people in, so there was no line-up and everyone got a chance to go swimming."

Doherty says the parents enjoyed not having to paying for any of the events.

"The response has been phenomenal, when we say there's no cost they go 'OH!' It's Family Day so there was no cost and that was a really cool thing."

The fun and games aren't over yet. The Town got local schools involved and created a website where children can track and enter their 'unplugged hours'.

Doherty says the class with the highest number of hours wins a special prize.

"The class with the most unplugged hours wins a pizza party. The thing about this that's really cool is talking with the kids. We ask the kids how difficult it was and some of the answers you get are 'Oh it was so terrible, it was so hard, I don't know how I did it'."
