Almost 140 tonnes of food has been saved from the landfill by Food Rescue in High River

They get food from grocery stores that doesn't have anything wrong with it but can't be sold because of small imperfections and food banks that can't be handed out, and put together packages for people in need.

It's intended for families having trouble making ends meet.

People who sign up are put on a rotation and they'll get a day when they can pick up their package of food in a COVID-safe manner.

Sarah Bruinsma says they had to swap out the way they were doing things when the pandemic started.

"Before COVID we had it set up kind of like the market and then with COVID we had to transition to this package system which has been working wonderfully and the majority of people that are receiving packages from us prefer this system that we've created with COVID," she says.

There are over 700 unique clients served by Food Rescue.

They also have the Caring Connections program for people who are isolated that might need transportation or just someone to check in on them and a grocery delivery program where they partner with Sobey's where volunteers will deliver groceries for free.
