One person died on Saturday in a house fire in Diamond Valley.

According to a Facebook post from Diamond Valley Fire Rescue, they responded to a residential fire alarm activation on Jan. 7 at around 3:30 a.m.

On their way to the Windsor Ave. residence, they received information that a structure fire was indeed the cause of the alarm and that a victim required medical attention.

Personnel entered the building and found a person deceased in the basement.

An investigation of the fire concluded that the cause was accidental and that it had started in the basement near where the deceased victim was found.

The Alberta Medical Examiners Office is investigating the cause of death, and the person's name is not being released at this time.

Others in the building were able to evacuate with minor injuries.

"This incident serves as a tragic reminder to have working smoke alarms installed on every floor, and that they are tested regularly. The outcome of this incident could have been far worse had it not been for the activation of the alarm system," reads the Facebook post from Diamond Valley Fire Rescue.
