The Highwood NDP Constituency Association is looking for a candidate to run in the next provincial election.

The party has usually parachuted someone into the area to run against an established candidate.

President Wilson Southam says that won't happen this time.

"There won't be any parachutes seen in the skies over Highwood I promise you that, there are enough very qualified people that pay attention to what's going on and know that it's not right for either the environment, for the people in the cities, the community, all of us are suffering," said Southam.

He says the whole province is suffering because of inflation, most of which he calls forced inflation brought on by moves made by the UCP government.

"Caps have been taken off insurance, caps have been taken off delivery charges for heat and gas and electricity, if you are going to post secondary, the prices are skyrocketing because of cuts to the post secondary institutions, they're not getting the support they used to get up until the last election.

"If a parent provided funds for their child to pay for tuition or books they could take the receipts and apply it to their income tax, that's been taken off the books," he says.

He says funding has also been cut for programs for young students who may need some extra help going into school so they can keep up, calling it shortsighted and cruel because, says Southam, it can affect a child's development and all the way through their schooling.

Southam also says when it comes to the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, they should be left alone.

"All you have to do is look up in those mountains and they're available to you if you look out your window, and the beauty there is absolutely world class and you just have to look over the mountains a little bit farther where they have strip mining over on the other side of the border and the destruction is permanent, it'll never be fixed."

He says it'll adversely impact tourism, agriculture and the water that flows from that area.

Southam says they're looking for someone who's socially responsible to represent the area for the NDP.

There's no set deadline but he says because of the thorough vetting process candidates need to go through, the sooner someone steps forward the better.
