The High River Royal Canadian Legion No. 71 is getting a major upgrade.

New flooring is going in the building to go along with last year's improvements.

Legion president Linda Reed says it's a whole new place.

"We went to a vinyl planking, commercial grade, so they took off all the old tile, repaired the floor underneath that was cracked, and they laid all that new flooring, so it looks fantastic," she says.

The Legion contracted the work to Simply Floors out of Okotoks at a cost of about $47,000.

"What we did to raise money for the cost of the floor, we had done a casino a year ago, so we had money from that and then we sent out letters to every member asking them if they would contribute to try and pay for at least half of the floor. We had a target of $25,000 to collect from our members and we exceeded that by a couple thousand,"

Reed says everything is on track for the Feb. 1 re-opening date.

She says this is just the latest building improvement.

Last year they painted the entire interior and added a new sound system and an 86" television screen which will come in handy next month.

"As part of the re-opening in February we're having free coffee and doughnuts on the 1st and 2nd, that's so everyone can come in and have a look and love it like we do. And then one the meat draw, which is Saturday the 3rd, we're having a double meat draw, so we used to have ten meat draws on a Saturday, we're having 20, we usually give away two $25 Sobey's gift cards, we're giving away four, plus we have two $15 Legion gift cards so we hope it brings people out."

She says on Sunday, February 4, they're having a movie matinee at 2:00 showing the film Calendar Girls with free coffee, tea, and popcorn on that big screen.

On Feb. 10 they've got Mexican dancers coming in at 5:00 and 6:00 chef Rob will be serving up a Mexican Fiesta featuring Mexican food.

"The following Friday is our Pub Night with Kenny and the Cow Tippers, they were well received last time and we're getting them back," Reed says.
