The Heritage Heights Musical Theatre Proudly Presents:

Dorothy in Wonderland - two nights only! April 27th and 29th

I had a chance to stop by the technical rehearsal of this delightful production, and chatted with Director Sherene Schmidtler.

I found out that in addition to learning the songs, memorizing lines and developing their characters, these students learned much more.

Schmidtler said “This is really a student driven show, they have adult guidance, but they have really taken ownership”

These grade 7, 8 and 9 students have been learning about set design and set building, theatrical makeup, costume design, lighting and sound, and more. They were then given the challenge to apply this knowledge. They took the initiative, researched and then alongside the teachers and parent volunteers, created this entire production.

The students made beautiful set pieces that include oversized mushrooms that need to be strong enough to support the weight of the actors. They are responsible to get the smile just right on the Cheshire Cat. They are managing back stage themselves, including set and costume changes. They have even been learning the meanings and background of “Theatre Talk” terms such as “cheating out” and “break a leg.”

They can proudly present this show as their own and you are invited to bring the whole family out to Heritage Heights School, sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labour.

Wear a Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland character costume and be entered to win a Chapters gift card.
