The middle of January can be a depressing time with Christmas over and the bills arriving.

The Town of High River's out to head off "Blue Monday" with its Magic of High River celebration January 13 and 14.

Special Events Coordinator Heather Ross said earlier they put out the call to residents to share what they love about the town, and they came through in a big way.

"We wanted to be open to creativity so whatever you feel represents your version of the spirit of High River or the community itself," Ross says.

"We have received a lot of photos, so whether it's a photo of George Lane Park or one of the events or the hoar frost that's out today looking really good or the sunset, whatever it might be, whatever brings you joy."

She says they've also received a lot of stories from residents explaining what the town means to them and why they love the community so much and kids have gotten involved by sending in drawings of the things they love about the community.

The Highwood Centre will be open from 12:00 to 5:00 with food and refreshments for those taking in the displays.

You can still take part in the Magic of High River project.

It's your chance to highlight the spirit of High River, be it through a photo, poem, painting, video, story, or any creative expression that captures the joy, beauty, and uniqueness of Town life.

Submissions can be sent to events@highriver.ca.

There's also a big event happening downtown Saturday and Sunday afternoons with world renowned ice sculptor, Scott Harrison and his crew carving ice sculptures on 3rd Ave by Rio Alta and Maggie’s Diner and two more on 4th Avenue by Colossi’s and across the street.

According to the Town, the final sculptures will "embody the spirit and community of High River, highlighting what distinguishes our Town and makes it a magical place to live, work, and play!"

The carvers will be available to talk to residents at 2:00 p.m. each day, should you have questions about the ice carving process, the sculptures themselves, or just to share what you love about our Town.
