Alberta minister travelling stateside to attract Hollywood productions

The provincial government is looking to attract more Hollywood productions to Alberta.

Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women Tanya Fir is in Los Angeles this week to meet with executives from HBO and other production companies to advocate for Alberta as a filming location.

A handful of high-profile productions have been filmed here in the last few years including The Last of Us, Prey, Fargo, and Ghostbusters Afterlife.

The Last of Us was nominated for 24 Emmy awards and walked away with eight over the weekend.

Fir will also be extolling the virtues of filming in Wildrose Country during an event she'll be co-hosting. 

A media release from the province says the event is a collaboration between the provincial government, the Canadian Consulate, Edmonton Screen Industries office, Calgary Economic Development and the Canada Media Fund.

One point she's sure to emphasize is the Alberta Made Screen Industries Program, which includes $2.8 million in grants for Alberta-made content.

Applications for the program are open from Jan. 16 to July 16.

Fir's trip goes from Jan. 10-12, and the province included a link to their travel and expense disclosure page in their release.
