Five Okotoks students mural creations have been chosen to be painted on outdoor public washrooms as part of the town's Paint-a-Potty project.

Allan Boss, Culture and Heritage Manager for the Town of Okotoks, says the winners were chosen through a series of voting polls.

"The students themselves had a vote, The Town of Okotoks, we had an internal vote, then we put it out to the public. We got about 300 votes on the designs," he said.

Boss says this initiative is a creative way to deter vandalism and graffiti to the washrooms.

"It was a really fun project. Parks Services approached Culture and Heritage Services and said they were experiencing some frequent graffiti on some of the washrooms, and asked if there was a way the community could own the washrooms more," he said.

Students from Foothills Composite and Alberta School of Fine Arts submitted designs.

A ceremony in the Sheep River Park this coming Friday at 2 p.m. will reveal the winning designs, along with the chosen locations for the mural paintings. Work is set to begin this fall, weather permitting.

Chosen artists will receive a $150 honorarium, as well as recognition from the Mayor of Okotoks.
