More light in the evenings and warmer temperatures means backyard fire pits are back in business.

The Okotoks Fire Department wants to make sure residents are being safe before they go to light their pits.

Ken Thevenot, Okotoks Fire Chief, says first they should check to see if there's any advisories in place.

"Please check the Town website before using your fire pit, just to ensure there's no bans, restrictions, or advisories that we have posted because that is our communication system for residents to find out whether they are able to use their fire pits or not."

He adds there's a couple tips residents should keep in mind.

"Go ahead and use the fire pits... but just ensure you are respectful to your neighbours and you are burning dry wood."

Residents can be courteous to surrounding homes by making sure their smoke isn't blowing directly into their yards or open windows.
