This week will see the big reveal of the memorial dedicated to local soldiers from WWII on Veterans Way.

The art piece has been an enormous collaboration between the Town, the Okotoks Arts Council, the Okotoks Legion, Friends of Elma St. and the Okotoks and District Historical Society, among others.

Culture and Heritage Manager for the Town, Allan Boss, says they are planning a special dedication ceremony for the big reveal on Saturday Sept. 30th.

"We're going to shut down Veterans Way and there will be a dedication ceremony taking place there, it's going to be a pretty cool event and we'll even have members of the Okotoks Legion Branch that will attend."

After the dedication is complete, Boss says the Town will be keeping Veterans Way closed, in order to relive the memories and stories from those the art features.

"The road will remain closed after the ceremony until noon, so that people can get a chance to go on a tour to hear the stories of the more than 150 veterans that are featured on the wall with Kathy Coutts."

Information on the Soldiers that are featured in the tours has come from the Okotoks Museum Archives, where over 150 stories and photos of our veterans are kept.

Boss shares that a local Okotoks art studio has had a lot to do with the design and was the winning proponent in the design and process.

"Expressions, the Okotoks Art company, has been helping us work through the design and is doing the install now." Boss says after so much thought and work, he's nothing but excited now. "It's been a long time coming, and we're thrilled to see it coming up."

The ceremony will take place on Veterans Way at 10:00 am, the road will remain closed until noon.
