The Canada Day long weekend is kicking off and with the celebrations comes some reminders about safety.

Cpl. Curtis Peters with the RCMP says long weekends tend to get a little crazy, they often see an increased number of vehicle collisions, and drinking and driving calls.

"Long weekends in general, we see an increase in collisions as more people are on the roads and celebrating." Cpl. Peters adds "Many of those collisions are alcohol related, so it would be really nice to have an accident and injury free weekend on our roads here in Alberta."

There are many ways to get out and have some fun this weekend, the RCMP will be celebrating the big day by increasing their police presence and check-stops in our community.

Cpl. Peters says the RCMP wish everyone a good holiday.

"Celebrate Canada Day and have fun, but make sure you're doing so safely.  We will see increased traffic and increased presence in our campgrounds, parks and rural areas as people tend to get out and experience what Canada has to offer. We just ask that people do so safely to ensure safety and fun for everyone."

Stay safe, have fun and Happy Birthday Canada!
