March 21-27 marks Canada Water Week, and the Town of Okotoks is reminding everyone to be mindful of their water consumption.

The town is already recognized on a national level for its water conservation efforts, and over the past decade Okotoks achieved a 41 percent reduction in gross per capita water consumption, even while experiencing a 45 percent increase in population.

Okotoks Communications Specialist Marni Hutchinson says the week is not just about water conservation, but respecting the water supply.

"We need to maintain enough water for our residents, but also to improve and maintain the health of our local aquatic ecosystem," she says. "As well as make sure that we're respectful of those downstream of us who get water flowing to the east."

Hutchinson says the Town is also using the week as a way to thank everyone in Okotoks.

"We're just using Canada Water Week as a way to recognize our residents of Okotoks for their continued efforts towards water conservation, because we are one of the national leaders in conserving water."
