The Town of Okotoks is continuing with its dedication to improve the life span of the Foothills Regional Landfill.

As part of council's 2020 Waste Management Plan and Multi Family Waste Diversion Plan, all multi family living units such as condos, apartments, and housing cooperatives need to have a recycling collection program.

Paul Lyons, waste services manager for the Town, says this is part of waste bylaw 18-16 and its time frame for these initiatives to take place.

"The bylaw compliments our waste management plan so the objective right now is to work along with these different multi family units in order to try and get those programs in place based on what the waste management plan outlined and what is outlined in our waste bylaw."

There's already a few facilities in Okotoks who have a program in place but the goal is to have all of them with a program for recycling by July 1.

Lyons says in working with multi family units they've noticed potential for saving money if two programs are rolled out at the same time.

"If a program is implemented, both programs like organics and recycling, there could potentially be cost savings so any multi family residents that want to work with us now at implementing both organics and recycling at the same time we see huge benefits to that."

Organics will be added as part of the Multi Family Waste Diversion plan by Jan. 1, 2018.

The Town is asking operators or management companies to get in touch with them as they have a person working specifically on this plan so any concerns can be directed to them for guidance and insight on the process.

The Town can be reached on this program by emailing waste@okotoks.ca or calling (403) 938- 8054.
