A long-standing Okotoks tradition is in need of community support to continue this year and years to follow.

Sue Russell, President of the Okotoks Garden Club, says they have hit a speed bump, similar to what the town had encountered while facilitating the event.

"The event was established by the Town of Okotoks almost 40 years ago, and a few years ago, they were having difficulty finding gardens. So they handed it over to the Garden Club, and asked if we would run it for them, and we are encountering the same problems," she said.

Pamela McLean, Executive Director for the Okotoks Food Bank, says the food bank is willing to help the Big Rock Garden Tour stay alive in any way they can.

"I think it would be very sad if this long-time tradition dies. So, I would encourage people to be proud of their gardens, and offer it. We have 302 volunteers at the Food Bank. We're considering perhaps utilizing some of those volunteers. We would gladly offer that kind of help if it encourages people to open up their doors," she said.

The Okotoks Food Bank is the recipient of the proceeds from the Big Rock Garden Tour, and the tour is in need of eight community gardens to keep the tradition alive moving forward. If they are unable to obtain these gardens, Russell says they will, unfortunately, have to stop the tradition.

The deadline to nominate a garden for the tour is May 10th. To nominate or offer a garden, you can contact Sue Russell directly at 403-982-3035, or contact Okotoks Parks and Recreation Department.
