Westwinds Communities in Black Diamond is hoping to be walking down a brand new path next year with the help of the town.

Chief Administrative Officer for Westwinds, Lauren Ingalls says they are hoping to build a new pathway to replace the over 40-year-old system they've had to retire.

"The pathway had been in existence for over 40 years, it had a significant slope, it was in poor condition and not very senior-friendly, we also had some incidents happen on-site, so we closed and demolished the path and rehabilitated the site."

Ingalls says this pathway would allow their seniors and workers to walk to work with much less resistance and would reconnect them to the community.

"This pathway would not only connect our site and the hospital through to the existing pathway system through the town, so it would allow our seniors and people who work to be able to walk to work safely."

Westwinds has already made grant funding requests in the past and hasn't found the success they were hoping for.

" We are looking for 50% funding which is permitted under the application, we are applying for just under 37-thousand dollars, we feel an area that we are deficient is generating enough interest and visibility for the project for it to be considered a need for the community."

Westwinds communities have already started a petition in hopes to gain support for the pathway system.

"We have an online petition, you can go onto our website at westwindscommunity.ca and if you scroll down the front page there is a petition that we are hoping people will sign to show them that there is a lot of interest in having this pathway installed."

The petition has to be submitted before September 10th for Westwind Communities to receive grant funding.
