The Sheep River Health Trust's annual Points of Light campaign was a success again in 2020.

During the annual event, locals sponsor lights on trees near the Okotoks Wellness Centre and Oilfields General Hospital In Black Diamond in honour of someone in their lives.

Executive Director Andrea Mitchell says contributors are able to choose where their donation goes.

"So if your family is really interested in senior care, or community programs, or would like to help in purchasing a piece of equipment for the hospital, you can absolutely direct your donation that way."

She says it's become an annual tradition for many local families.

"I'd say there's probably 25 families who donate every year to the same Points of Light and remember the same lights. It's really interesting to see that over the years, even as time moves on, we still remember our loved ones in the same way."

This year's campaign brought in around $3,000.

Mitchell says it's been tremendous seeing the community continue to show their support, even though so many found themselves in need this year.

"We went into 2020, we looked at our budget, and said "You know what? We're going to change what we're going to do this year," and we have, but our community has really come forward with Points of Light, Avenue of Trees, Photos with Santa, the Western Wheel Cares campaign, there's been such a huge outpouring from the community to support local organizations. It's amazing to see that even as we struggle in our personal lives, we still remember our local people, our local communities, our local charities."
