Two people have been arrested after allegedly passing counterfeit money in Nanton, Claresholm and Fort Macleod.

RCMP in Nanton learned of the phony U.S. currency Friday, September 11, and there were reports of it being used in Claresholm and in Fort MacLeod in the following days.

On Monday, September 14, a community message was sent out by local businesses and the next day Claresholm RCMP were made aware the suspects were back in town by concerned residents and business owners.

A man and woman were arrested without incident at a local business and a search of their vehicle provided evidence of more crimes.

Claresholm RCMP have charged a 37 year old man from Red Deer with three counts of utter counterfeit money, three counts of illegal possession of government documents, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, one count of trafficking in property obtained by crime under $5000 and one count of possession under the controlled drugs and substances act.

A 26 year old woman, also of Red Deer, has been charged with two counts of utter counterfeit money, three counts of illegal possession of government documents, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and one count of possession under the controlled drugs and substances act.

Both have been released and are to appear in Fort MacLeod Provincial court Wednesday, October 7.

RCMP say there may be more counterfeit bills out there and are asking retailers to remain vigilant.
