From an unknown walk-on to captain Connor Chambers did it all in just two seasons with the Okotoks Oilers and now has a NCAA scholarship to show for it.

The Pequot Lakes, MN native came to the Oilers in the 2014-15 season after being released from the Brooks Bandits in training camp and never looked back.

Chambers will be heading to Wisconsin Stevens-Point this coming year and says he couldn't be more excited to keep his hockey career going at a high level.

"Stevens-Point has a really good program, James Poole really helped me to get in contact with them and sold me to the coach at Stevens-Point so credit to him for helping me move on," he says. "It's exciting that my hockey career is continuing and I'll still be able to pursue my goals."

Chambers in his rookie season with the Oilers started like any other underdog story, in and out of the line-up but whenever he cracking the starting line-up he never missed an opportunity to show what he was made of.

He says he remembers his transition from limited minutes to being out in key situations late two seasons ago.

"Couple guys went down and I kind of had to fill a bigger role at towards the end of that season and this past season I able to be the captain and kind of the leader of the team playing some big minutes for them. The experience there really was what propelled me to get to the next level to play college hockey because I'm able to play in all situations."

There was talks of Chambers getting a letter on his jersey this season but he says never really imagined he'd be the man behind the 'C' this year.

"I thought about going into the season because we lost a lot of veteran players from the past year. I kind of thought it was going to go down to me or a couple other guys but I was still surprised, I wasn't there as long and I'm American I guess. The only American captain the Oilers ever had, it was nice to hear James tell me I was going to be captain this year."

Chambers was proud to captain this year's team that dealt with a ton with being the youngest team in the South Division and says he enjoyed his last season in junior even though the Oilers didn't go as far into the playoffs as they wanted.

But he does have one moment will stick out in his tenure with the Oilers.

"My first year I guess I had that overtime winner against Canmore in the 1st round so that was probably my favourite moment of my Oilers career was scoring that goal but I'd say just the run we made through the season was really memorable too."

Chambers will be taking business at Stevens-Point.

All 95' born players on the 2015-16 roster have committed to college hockey programs including Drew Weich, SAIT Trojans (ACAC) and Colin O'Neill will join former Oiler John Edwardh at U-Mass Lowell.
