Champion Park will once again open up to the public!

For decades it was used privately by the Knowlton family and family friends until it was donated to Foothills County and the Town of Okotoks in 2016.

Since then, it has been opened once annually for residents to enjoy and learn about the Canadian Pacific Railway.

This year, however, they will be opening it up for more than one day and will be adding a cinematic theme to the park.

Instead of the traditional open house, they will be playing western-themed movies featuring railroads and trains.

This is a great way to get residents to experience it in a new way, says Okotoks community events specialist Zach Adams.

"We wanted to get people out there and just to kind of see the park as it is, and so we thought a great way would be to have some movies out there because we had really great success with our drive-in movie events in June.

"[It's] the same registration that we would have had for our driving movies in June. The only difference is we are charging five dollars per vehicle, so as many people can legally fit in a vehicle, it's only five dollars."

Entry starts at 8:00 p.m. with the shows starting at 8:30 each night.

Since the screen is set up outside, moviegoers are recommended to prepare for whatever weather mother nature might throw at them.

"The weather in Alberta can be plus 20 and beautiful, and it also could be plus 10 and cold, so we just want to make sure that everybody who's coming out is dressing for the weather and bringing their own equipment to enjoy a movie outside."
