A citizen-led walking tour taught residents about our natural environment this weekend.

The Town of Okotoks hosted their first Jane's Walk this year. The international festival of walking tours is an effort to raise awareness of our natural and urban environment.

The town's Jane's Walk took place directly after the River Valley Clean-up Saturday afternoon.

Jinny Toffelmire, the Town's Environment and Sustainability Specialist, said this year's walk focused on a number of natural characteristics of the Foothills.

"The Jane's Walk festivals encourage people to share their stories about their neighborhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbors," Toffelmire said.

Jane's Walk is named for Jane Jacobs, an environmentalist writer who passed away in 2006.
