UPDATE: Foothills Fire Department has reported the grass fires South West of High River are now under control.

The Foothills Fire Department say multiple grass fires are burning southwest of High River, just north of Highway 540.

That highway is closed at the fires location, while fire crews work to get the blaze under control.

Due to the high winds, the fire is spreading very quickly from the west and heading east.

Fire and Police crews are monitoring the fire and ask that residents avoid the area.

Foothills School Division is monitering the situation and say they're in constant contact with the Foothills Fire Department and Emergency Services.

Currently Cayley School is open and classes are being held as usual.

Additionaly, Nanton RCMP have issued an extreme driving hazard for the Foothills including Highway 22 and Highway 2.

Roadways are experiencing extremely high winds upwards of 150 km/h.

RCMP are asking drivers to proceed with caution when driving as traffic may be slowed.

Southern Alberta Towing reports multiple trailers have rolled over on both Highway 22 and Highway 533.

Drivers are being encouraged not to tow holiday trailers or empty trailers as they can be flipped easily, drivers are also reminded to secure any loose debris.
