A GoFundMe page set up to help a High River man and his family while he's undergoing cancer treatments has surpassed its goal.

Matt Thompson has already battled colon cancer and, during a check-up, spots were found on his lungs.

His friend Nick Kellock, who set up the fundraiser page says the starting goal was $10,000 but they've surpassed that.

"Shortly after your broadcast we received a donation of $5,000 from somebody who used a fake name, so we get that information on the back end of the GoFundMe but that brought the GoFundMe to our goal of $10,000 and it's now moving beyond that," said Kellock.

"As of today we're just a little over $12,000 raised which is amazing and that goes a long way for Matt and the family."

He says there's no real deadline for the page.

In the meantime, plans are continuing for a big fundraising event including music and silent auction items Dec. 17 at the High River Brewing Company.

"Highwood Distillers donated a package for us, Brenda Walsh donated from her business Westridge Laser and Massage and Aspen Crossing has donated four tickets to their train as well, so they do the champagne Brunch, so they've donated four tickets and there's tonnes more," according to Kellock.
