The Okotoks Dawgs played their home opener Friday night against the Fort McMurray Giants.

The night opened with the honouring of first responders from the area who helped out with the wild fires that caused the town to evacuate almost a month ago.

The Dawgs ended up falling to the Giants 9-5 putting them at a 0-3 season to date.

Daniel Fredrickson says that the problem is that the team just can't close on that win when they are up.

"We left a lot of guys on base tonight and apart of that is a lack of experience sometimes. It is just frustrating to lose a game when you have so many base runners, we had 14 hits and they had three errors but we just couldn't capitalize off it."

The Dawgs head back onto the Seaman Stadium field Saturday night to take on the Medicine Mavericks.

This will be the third time the Dawgs and Mavericks have faced off in the past four days and the Mavericks have shown they are out to win each time.

"That was clear when we played them at Medicine Hat a couple days ago, they were down and they battled, came back and won," Fredrickson says.

Fredrickson adds that the team already has started to bond and form a good relationship early into the season.

"You have guys who have played with each other for almost there whole lives, and you can see we are having fun."
