We've had a dry summer, mild autumn... it almost makes you wonder what Mother Nature has in store for winter.

Whether it's snow-mageddon or cool and dry, High River's Fire Chief, Cody Zebedee, says it's best to be prepared for everything.

"During the winter months, there's always that higher risk of having snow and ice on the roads, spinning out and hitting the ditch. We need to make sure we're prepared for those events."

He says having a small emergency kit in the back seat of your car could make a world of difference if you happen to get stranded.

"We should all be carrying a small first aid kit, a blanket and some warm clothes, a cell phone charger, and a small shovel so that if you do get stuck you can try to dig yourself out, or at least ensure your exhaust pipe is clear of snow and debris."

Zebedee says he always ensures his family's vehicles are ready for winter as a precaution.

"It's a great idea to have a traction aid even if it's just kitty litter in the back of the car." Zebedee adds "It's also important to ensure you have your vehicle into the mechanic before snow flies just to make sure everything is sound, that you're not going to have any big problems over the winter, checking your heating and cooling systems, and of course using winter tires."

Should you find yourself in a ditch this winter Zebedee says if there are no injuries and no accident, you can call a tow truck directly or family members, if you or someone else involved has an injury or there's an accident to report it's best to call 911.

In either case, he says sometimes there can be delays in response, so emergency kits can come in handy.
