With many Albertans stocking up on food in order to prepare for possible quarantine, the continued access to food and supplies has been brought into question for many.

During a live conference yesterday afternoon, Alberta's Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Devin Dreeshen outlined some steps the provincial government is taking to ensure Albertans continue to have access to food.

He says they've been monitoring the food supply, and are taking proactive steps to ensure its security.

"Alberta's food production and distribution systems are diverse and stable. We are in constant contact with our partners in Alberta's food supply chain, and Albertans can be confident that the necessary steps are being taken to make sure that people have what they need."

Dreeshen highlighted a few specific steps, such as a request for the federal government to deem Alberta's food supply chain as an essential service, as well as the maintenance of Canada's trade relationship between Canada and the U.S.

He also reaffirmed sentiments from Premier Jason Kenney and Dr. Deena Hinshaw that Albertans need to look out for one another.

"Do not hoard food and daily essentials. The system is intact, and people should be mindful of irrational panic buying, and the effect it has on their neighbours, Alberta's food supply is and will continue to be secure, and we need to make sure everyone can access the essentials they need."

He says the provincial government is also aware of the drop in donations to food banks, as well as the increased demand for their services. Dreeshen says the provincial government is working with Alberta's food banks to assess short, medium, and long term needs in order to meet that demand.
