The price of gasoline is set to go up on April 1 and already some prices around the Foothills have jumped at the pumps.

Locally, in High River, you can still get gas from $136.9 cents per litre to $145.6 cents per litre.

In Okotoks, prices also jumped up to $145.9 cents per litre, although Costco is always cheaper.

The Alberta government is set to add the full fuel tax back on gasoline prices come April 1 and the federal government will be increasing the carbon tax from 14 cents per litre to around 17 cents per litre.

Alberta Minister of Finance, Nate Horner, says the fuel tax program could kick in again if the price of oil goes down. 

He was quoted in a media release:

“Alberta’s government is committed to following through with the rate schedule we laid out for the fuel tax relief program last year. When oil prices go back up, the fuel tax rate will come back down. If oil prices rise above $79.99 per barrel, the program will kick back in, and the fuel tax rate will drop.

“We will continue to review the fuel tax on a quarterly basis and provide another update before the end of June.”

So come April 1, expect a jump of at least 7 cents per litre.

And while the increases take effect on April Fool's Day, it's no joke.
