The Wildrose Party says the provincial government is misleading Albertans on the full cost of the carbon tax.

Shadow Minister of Electricity and Renewables Don MacIntyre says the NDP isn't giving us the full scope of how the tax will work throughout the economy.

"By the time it's fully implemented, this carbon tax is going to result in somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000 extra costs to our citizens. That does not take into account the increase in municipal taxes and the cost of busing our children, things like that."

Macintyre says the Alberta government hasn't dared to mention how the carbon tax will affect municipal governments with things like garbage collection and heating, which will show up in our property taxes. He says the government wants to get 3 billion dollars out of this tax, despite the rebates some Albertans will see.

"Three billion dollars is coming out of my pocket and your pocket and everyone else's pocket. We took a look at the rebates, and we applied those rebates. And it still means that the people receiving those rebates are going to be paying carbon tax. Those rebates do not fully offset the carbon tax."

Macintyre says it was clear in the Climate Change Panel Report that the carbon tax was to be revenue neutral by offsetting the full amount of revenue to the people of Alberta. He says this government is not offsetting the tax, and it will cost families at least $1,000 in extra costs when fully implemented. He says this is a generous calculation that doesn't take into account costs like gasoline and diesel fuel.

"We come up with an easy thousand dollars, without even looking hard. it's what you call a cumulative tax because it just piles up all throughout our entire economy. This government is a socialist government, and repealing taxes is just not in their DNA."

Macintyre says it's just a tax grab that has nothing to do with reducing pollution. He says the government is offering rebates to some Albertans, but those who are unemployed or on a fixed income will feel the brunt because they are the ones who can least afford another tax.
