The Town of Okotoks is clarifying some the frequently asked questions by residents about the new waste management system that will be effective for all Okotokians October 1.

All homes will have a black for garbage disposal, the blue cart for recycling and a new organic green cart to use at a monthly cost of just over $20 a month.

Waste Services Manager Paul Lyons says for those who had been using the new Eco-Centre for disposal of certain wastes may now just have to take some items to the centre.

"If you recognize the name we're calling it a Eco-Centre," he says. "So this building is designed for accepting material that you cannot put in any of the other bins, we take paint, electronics or household hazardous waste."

Lyons says it may be confusing for residents who currently use the centre but says the Eco-Centre isn't just for the Town as the M.D. of Foothills is also able to access it.

"This facility will be here to serve all those different user groups along with the entire town it will accept those materials that you can't or should put in your garbage or it can't go in your blue or green cart."

He reminds all residents that once the new green bins come out to sort accordingly away from the black bins to keep recyclables away from the landfill.

"Bottles, cans, paper, cardboard. All of the material goes in loosely except for shredded paper and food wastes. Green carts include food wastes this cart is able to take all the material that you wouldn't normally put in a backyard composting program."
