Motorists need to be on the lookout for large farm equipment on the roads this spring.

Farmers have now started seeding, which means there's more equipment on roads in the Foothills as they move from field to field.

Ag for Life's Communications and Marketing Specialist, Alana Julius, said it's important to remember farm equipment moves very slowly.

"It moves 30 to 40 km/hour on average, and so you really need to be sure to slow down and leave room. There are also a lot of blind spots on the equipment, so it's important for motorist to keep back at least 50 feet so the operator can see you."

In Ag for Life's Be Safe and Be Seen road safety campaign, they say to be patient and recognize large machinery may take up more than one lane.

There's also precautions farmers need to take when hitting the roads, Julius said.

"Start with making sure all your warning flashers and lights are clean, visible and working properly, and then making sure you're staying alert for hazards on the road, such as soft shoulders, loose gravel, pot holes, and those kind of things."

Ag for Life's safety campaign also says, farmers need to make sure no vehicles are passing when turning left, and to plan you're route ahead of time.
