One Edmonton school division has decided to cancel school trips to the U.S. and abroad because of mass shootings in the U.S. and increased terrorism around the world.

While the Foothills School Division is certainly keeping an eye on world events, Assistant Superintendent Drew Chipman says they're not ready to pull the plug yet.

"We do have some trips planned for the spring. At this point the Superintendent has talked to the schools and said they'll continue to monitor the situation and you might want to be aware there could be some changes. We're not going to try and put kids in harms way, that's paramount in our point of view, so we've got to try and keep kids safe."

Chipman says trips abroad are large educational and life learning events for students and he'd hate to see them cancelled, but at the same time the responsibility for students safety is job one for the board.

Chipman says the Edmonton Catholic School District has actually come under fire for their decision.

The organization that provides insurance for school districts in the Province is recommending that school boards reconsider any international travel for students.
