The Town of Okotoks launches its municipal census online, starting Wednesday, May 2.

Over the next week or so, enumerators will be hanging white tags on doors throughout town with a PIN number required to access the census online.

They're asking one question: "What is the usual number of residents living in this household on May 2, 2018."

Town of Okotoks Corporate and Strategic Services Director Nancy Weigel says the data is valuable for a couple of reasons.

"The information is very helpful to the town, to businesses, school divisions, et cetera," Weigel says. "But mainly, the Town of Okotoks would like to be able to access any additional provincial and federal funding. So, any kind of grants, as an example that are on a per capita basis, if we've got a current count of all of our residents, that brings more money in to the town."

The census will be accessible online starting today and closing May 16 at midnight.

After that, enumerators will be going going door-to- door from May 17 to June 3 to collect information from anyone who didn't complete the census online.

"We've had a incredible response from our residents in the past, with a very high completion rate," Weigel says. "And so, I want to thank all the residents for their past participation and I look forward to them participating in this year's census as well."
