The Town of Okotoks is offering some incentive for those who conduct energy audits in their homes.

The Energy Efficiency Rebate Program helps to offset the cost for residents to complete a professional home energy audit by offering a 50% rebate on the cost of the audit.

Jinny Toffelmire, Environment and Sustainability Specialist with the Town, says an audit will offer residents insight on how their home is running.

"It's an opportunity for Okotoks residents to bring in a home energy efficiency auditing professional so this professional can come into their home and provide them with a complete report on how efficient their home is," she explains. "This person is going to look at the mechanical areas in their home and also where heat might be escaping."

The idea behind the energy audits is for homeowners to increase their knowledge about the amount of energy their homes consume and help identify the best solutions for decreasing their energy footprint.

Toffelmire says the town also offers a Do-It-Yourself Home Energy Audit Kit.

"In that kit there's a few different tools people can use. We do have a thermal camera so people can take a look at where heat might be escaping from their home, there's also a radon monitor and a kilowatt tool that lets you know how much energy something is using when you plug it into the wall. There's also an electro smog meter."

Currently the two kits the Town has are booked up until March.
