The Town of Okotoks finished clean-up at the Drake Landing storm pond on Friday from their first goldfish eradication.

Rotenone was applied under the water surface and only affected organisms with gills.

Christa Michailuck, parks manager, says a second treatment on the storm pond will be taking place.

"This treatment should've eradicated all of the fish that were in the pond then the second treatment should catch any newly hatched fish so if we get any bigger fish we'll know that those survived the first treatment. We don't have an exact date for the second treatment."

Michailuck adds it's estimated there may have been a total of 10,000 fish in the pond.

"We picked up several hundred fish, mostly larger fish, we didn't worry about the little tiny ones because the birds can easily pick them away and they decompose readily. I would say there was probably a few thousand fish, most of them sink and decompose on the bottom and about 20% float according to Alberta Environment and Parks."

She says one of the largest fish they found was 10 inches long.

The first treatment was covered by the Alberta Conservation Association and Alberta Environment and Parks. A $10,000 grant from the Alberta Conservation Association will go towards the second treatment in Drake Landing as well as the two in Crystal Ridge.
