Literacy for Life currently has their Community Cardboard Challenge going on in conjunction with the Global Cardboard Challenge.

The challenge is to use your imagination and make something using cardboard and recycled material.

Lit for Life Executive Director Sue Stegmeier says many benefits are received by participating.

"By taking part in this challenge it builds creativity, critical thinking, there are so many skills involved in this process."

She explains the concept of the challenge came about when they were looking for something to enhance their participation in Art and Culture days with the Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee.

While writing and reading are cultural activities, Stegmeier felt that there needed to be something extra, and the Global Cardboard Challenge was just the thing.

It is an activity everyone in the community can participate in and share.

"People can post pictures or videos on social media, but we also want them to bring it to the Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee to be put on display," Stegmeier says.

The Literacy for Life team has already taken part and made their interpretation of what a father is through cardboard.

What is unique about this activity is it allows participants to think outside the box, and make anything they imagine come to life.

Stegmeier says that it also allows parents to take a look at their children and think about what are the benefits of participating?

"What does a child learn from using a cardboard box and recycled material versus a bought toy, it is also cheaper, and there are so many things a child learns from creating and making."

Creations will be put on display Saturday at the Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee along with materials for people to come out and make their own creations.
