Okotoks Waste Management Services presented a six month universal recycling program update to Town Council on Monday and the report shows promising trends.

From December to March the Town collected 1,930 tonnes of waste in black, blue and green bins, of that amount 829 tonnes was diverted from the landfill.

Paul Lyons, waste services manager for the Town of Okotoks, says the organics cart program is working well so far.

"We've seen that over 600 tonnes of organics has been collected at the curb. This again we're attributing to the new program."

According to Lyons, over the past six months curbside recycling participation in town has increased by 53%.

Lyons thanks Okotoks for its continued support of waste diversion.

"I want to say thank you to all the residents who are currently participating in the program, we really hope that we will have the greatest level of participation so that we can reduce our waste in the landfill."
