It was a busy summer for the Town of Okotoks as once again Conservation Educators helped teach the ways to a greener lifestyle in the community.

The educators were out and about at numerous events held during the summer including Chilifest where they showed off the ability to have a completely green festival with the cutlery and bowls used during the event and taking that waste out of the landfill.

One of the educators Anastassia Martynova says they covered quite a bit of ground during their term.

"We wanted to do public outreach at a lot of events and educate people about sustainability programs currently at the Town as well as the cart programs coming out," she says. "We wanted to also do zero waste at all of these events and try to divert as much as possible and we had quite a bit of door to door visits and school visits."

She says she was blown away at how eco-friendly the Town actually is as a whole.

"A lot of people knew about the benefits of recycling and were all for composting, a lot already compost in their back yard, lots go to the EcoCentre and just how many people from the M.D. come to the EcoCentre to throw out their own recyclables because they don't have a cart service."

The educators visited over 2,000 homes during their public engagements and Martynova says it was pleasure to share her knowledge of conservation with the town.

"Just being able to tell this to the general public who may not have time in their daily lives to look up specific facts for example. So the schools were really my favourite part, that's what I was looking forward to but I think the most interesting and valuable part of this experience over the summer has been working in a town as small as Okotoks."
