With substantial amounts of snowfall it's important residents are keeping their sidewalks clear.

According to Okotoks Municipal Enforcement, all homeowners or occupants of a premise in the town of Okotoks are responsible to keep their sidewalk clear as soon as possible within 24 hours after any snowfall.

Angie Clay, peace officer for the Town of Okotoks, says renters may be responsible for their sidewalks.

"Typically as a renter you would be the occupier of that property and therefore you would be responsible to clear the snow unless you have a prior arrangement with your landlord."

Homeowners or occupants are responsible for shovelling the public sidewalk that's adjacent to their property, which if they're on a corner lot includes the sidewalk around the front and side of their home.

Clay says residents do need to be mindful of where they're placing their shovelled snow.

"People who are clearing snow from their private property or the public sidewalks shall place that snow onto their lawn, their own property, they are not allowed to deposit the excess snow onto the highway because that causes problems for vehicles."

Anyone who's dealing with excess snow piles can call the Okotoks Operations Centre to have them removed.
