A sheriff with the High River Integrated Traffic Unit got a special call to duty last week.

Sheriff Brad Koltai was in his marked patrol car on Highway 2 near Okotoks on Thursday about 5:30 p.m., when he was flagged down by a motorist stopped on the side of the highway.

The motorist had been driving with his pregnant wife when she suddenly began going into labour.

Koltai contacted EMS, but before they could attend the scene he assisted the father in delivering a baby girl on the side of the highway.

Shortly after the baby was born, the sheriff’s RCMP partner from the High River detachment also arrived, and together the two officers assisted the family until the arrival of EMS.
