A busy week for the Okotoks Fire Department as they responded to an above average number of calls in this week's fire report.

Fire Services were dispatched 29 times during the week and responded to a variety of calls including some relating to the flash flooding that occurred during last week's storms.

Okotoks Fire Chief Ken Thevenot

Fire Chief Ken Thevenot says they dealt with a couple of fires outside of town.

"We had nine medical responses, eight alarm system activations, we helped outside of our community one was for a structure fire and one was for a vehicle fire," he says. "We had one water rescue it was trapped vehicle that was on the street and water all around it and the person was unable to get out of the vehicle."

In the week of heavy rain and hail causing chaos for those commuting Thevenot says if you're caught in a heavy fall of hail or rain or end up in a low spot on the road with vast amounts of water in it, sometimes you guys have to stop and wait for things to blow over.

"Just hold where you're at, stay in your vehicles, try to find a safe location. Driving through these puddles can do some damage to your vehicles and it's unknown what's underneath the water what you're driving through as well sometimes on those roads. So be very cautious but if you can avoid those puddles try to go a different route."

To date the department has responded to 488 calls in 2016.
