In the Speech from the Throne  on Thursday, March 8th the Provincial Government says they will be working on ways to make things safer for residents in rural Alberta.

"Today in Alberta, especially in rural areas, people are concerned for the safety of their homes, their property and the well-being of those they love. That must change."

Premier Rachel Notley, in a press conference before the speech says addressing rural crime is critical.

"We've heard from many Albertans there have been some changed in the way things are unfolding in rural Alberta," said Notley. "Mostly because of habitual criminals and organized crime and we have been working very hard with RCMP to figure out the best solution to that."

In the speech they stated the focus will be to act on the advice of police and law enforcement experts, including specific measures to better address the challenges of policing in rural communities and new measures to make sure people who refuse to obey the law are held to account.

The government will invest in new bait-and-tracking technology, including technology related to farm equipment, new measures to
help police spend less time on paperwork and more time on the street, and putting boots on the ground where they're needed most to protect families.

There will be an announcement from the Justice Minister on March 9th.
