In celebration of International Women's Day the Rowan House Women's Emergency Shelter will be putting on an event at the Okotoks United Church to help bring attention to domestic abuse and talk about what they can provide those in crisis.

Director of Programs for the Rowan House, Carmen Darmentaciune says it's more than just talking about the independence of women.

"We try to celebrate together to give gratitude and empower women through healthy relationships," she says.

The evening will start with a networking event and potluck at the church followed by presentations by Darmentaciune and Rowan House Executive Director Sherri Botton.

Darmentaciune says there's no exceptions when it comes to domestic violence.

"Domestic violence is everywhere and the stats are very high, everybody needs to know that domestic abuse isn't discriminating. It's happens in different age ranges, different economic levels and cultural backgrounds."

She says there will be a TED talk like presentation to close out the evening.

"We'll talk about red flags for abuse and what abuse is, we try to raise more awareness about abuse and we'll finish with a talk about gratitude," Darmentaciune says.

Everything gets underway at 5:30 p.m. and runs until 8:30 p.m.
