The Canadian Taxpayers Federation says Alberta Teachers need to take a 10% pay cut.

They say staring down the gun of a $10.4 billion dollar deficit this year, teachers can't be exempt from necessary spending reductions.

CTF Alberta Director Paige MacPherson says one other thing concerning to them is the Alberta Teachers Union isn't ruling out asking for a wage increase.

"I mean the degree to which they would be out of touch would be almost incomprehensible. We can't afford to be spending more on our government services right now. That's just the reality of the situation. And compensation is an area where Alberta spends a great deal more than the rest of the country."

MacPherson says teachers at the top of the pay scale earn $99,004 a year.

She adds that rolling back those wages 10% will still leave those teachers the highest paid in the country.
