The Okotoks River Valley Clean up took place on Saturday, with around 100 volunteers coming out to take part in the event.

Chair of the Okotoks Culture, Parks and Recreation Committee Joe Sheldrake says that the day is about picking up as much garbage as possible and planting around 2000 seedlings, but in the safest way.

"We get you hooked up with gloves, a garbage bag and anything else we can while you are out there."

Sheldrake adds that he expected around 15,000-2,000 pounds worth of garbage was be picked up during the event.

As well as sometimes it is interesting to see some of the stuff the volunteers find.

"One year we found a refrigerator, last year I found a spare tire and a part to a trailer hitch."

Volunteers not only walk away from the event with a sense of knowing they have helped out their community and the environment, but they also walk away with prizes from the events sponsors. As well as a full stomach of goodies from McDonalds, Cobbs Bread and the BBQ the town put on for them.

Shaldrake says that it is a great way to start the summer.

"It is great to come out and see everybody, as well it's a great kick off to the summer especially with the great weather we have had today."
