A globe-trotting bike has made it's way back to the Netherlands this week after it was stolen from a couple vacationing in Alberta to ride through the rockies in July.

Ron Uhlenburg, Co-Owner of Ridley's Cycle in Okotoks, says Marc and Jeanette Reniers were victims of theft after their tandem bicycle was stolen from a Calgary bed and breakfast on their first night's stay.

"They were coming over for a holiday and bike trip, and brought their bike with them. And, literally, the first day they arrived, that night the bike was stolen from the b&b where they were staying," he said.

The Reniers visited the Ridley's Cycle shop in Calgary the following day to replace the tandem with single cycles so they could continue their journey as planned.

"Considering what had just happened, they had an amazing attitude. They were disappointed, obviously, but it was just, this isn't going to slow us down on our holiday. We're still here to ride bikes, let's do it. So, they grabbed a couple, and ended up having a good holiday and enjoyed their time here," said Uhlenberg.

Within a few weeks, one of Uhlenbuerg's staff recognized a social media post from the Calgary City Police after recovering $70,000 worth of stolen bikes, which included the Renier's unique tandem.

The bike sustained damages, and was forwarded to Ridley's for repair, followed by collaborative efforts between Ridley's, the Calgary City Police, WestJet, River Wynde B&M and KLM Airlines to coordinate the return of the tandem to the Netherlands.

"The challenge was how do you return it to them. The Calgary Police reached out to WestJet, who, in turn, reached out to KLM, and KLM agreed to transport the bike back to them," said Uhlenberg.

It has been confirmed that the bike has been returned to the rightful owners in the Netherlands this week, and they are grateful for the efforts of all in this unique circumstance.
